Our island, Our future
In an age of greater awareness of the negative impact pollution has on our planet, tourism is one of the main culprits: transportation, over-development and depletion of natural resources help to make sure it is not an environmentally-friendly industry. Skopelos relies on tourism and is faced with these issues -- while attempting to maintain its own cultural heritage and a clean living environment. Madro Travel has a policy of raising the awareness of holiday makers to things they can do here on Skopelos which can make a ‘real’, and positive, difference to the destination and the people living here. As an agency, we wish to actively encourage discussion on and participation in sustainable activities on Skopelos. Madro Travel aims to promote "sustainable tourism." (nature and wildlife activities), ecotourism (promoting yet protecting natural areas from mass-tourism and development), and agrotourism (educational holidays in agriculture and culture to sustain rural population). In these ways, tour operators, local businesses and visitors alike can genuinely appreciate and respect the culture and natural landscape of our island. A holiday spent exploring the countryside and villages, learning about the production of local cuisine and crafts can be a refreshing and rewarding break from city life. The informed traveller can also be directly contributing to the sustainable tourism effort by supporting the communities working to preserve their local traditions. Remember, if we all work together, our message will reach more people, change more minds, and touch more hearts.

This house is located three quarters of the way up Raches Hill, behind Skopelos town. Its position gives it fabulous views down to the village and out to sea towards Alonissos.

Long tranquil days can be spent up at the house, savouring the views from the swimming pool terrace, and enjoying a barbecue, but it is just as easy to dine out in the village (either on foot down the mule track, or by car), or to visit one of Skopelos' beaches.

The house is the result of a conversion of two old country cottages, and this means that it has a slightly eccentric layout, and is built on three levels. The main entrance opens into the large kitchen with its wood-burning Aga, (it also has an electric oven for more ease of use!). Off the kitchen is the living room with fireplace, dining table, and French windows which open onto the pool terrace. Also on the ground floor is a WC.

Stairs ascend to the middle floor which comprises: bedroom with wooden floors, double bed, and french windows onto a small wooden sea facing balcony; bathroom with bath and WC; small ancillary kitchen.

A further set of stairs lead up to the top floor which comprises a twin bedroom with French windows onto a sea- facing balcony, and with en-suite bathroom with shower and WC.

The house has been stylishly and comfortably furnished throughout, and is excellent holiday accommodation for either families, or couples. There is plenty of space outside for sunbathing, and alfresco dining: in addition to the pool terrace, there is an upper terrace with a stone built barbecue, outside sink, and large wooden table.
