Our island, Our future
In an age of greater awareness of the negative impact pollution has on our planet, tourism is one of the main culprits: transportation, over-development and depletion of natural resources help to make sure it is not an environmentally-friendly industry. Skopelos relies on tourism and is faced with these issues -- while attempting to maintain its own cultural heritage and a clean living environment. Madro Travel has a policy of raising the awareness of holiday makers to things they can do here on Skopelos which can make a ‘real’, and positive, difference to the destination and the people living here. As an agency, we wish to actively encourage discussion on and participation in sustainable activities on Skopelos. Madro Travel aims to promote "sustainable tourism." (nature and wildlife activities), ecotourism (promoting yet protecting natural areas from mass-tourism and development), and agrotourism (educational holidays in agriculture and culture to sustain rural population). In these ways, tour operators, local businesses and visitors alike can genuinely appreciate and respect the culture and natural landscape of our island. A holiday spent exploring the countryside and villages, learning about the production of local cuisine and crafts can be a refreshing and rewarding break from city life. The informed traveller can also be directly contributing to the sustainable tourism effort by supporting the communities working to preserve their local traditions. Remember, if we all work together, our message will reach more people, change more minds, and touch more hearts.

Traditional Wooden caique moored off Skopelos

On board the “Gorgona”, the most traditional excursion boat in the Sporades

AEGEAN PARADISE EXCURSION TO THE SPORADES MARINE PARK

This one day trip provides a chance to get to know The National Marine Park of Alonissos, Northern Sporades, on board a traditional Greek caique, the 'Gorgona' (The Mermaid).

A caique is the term for a wooden fishing boat usually found in the waters of the Ionian or Aegean seas. It is traditionally a small wooden trading vessel, with a timber keel covered with caravel planking; brightly painted and rigged for sail; with a short mast.  The bowsprit is stayed by rigging and the tiller is in the stern. The bow post distinguishes the caïque from other Mediterranean working boats.

Caiques have existed in this part of the world for thousands of years. Each caique is unique. The majority are built from the boat-builder's craft and memory,  having no plans.

Your guide and captain is Pakis, a native of Alonissos, who has large amounts of both knowledge and enthusiasm for the area ((specifically set up to protect the Monachus Seal  and save it from extinction) and its wildlife.

The combination of travelling on a piece of Greek history visiting uninhabited islands with beautiful coastlines of turquoise waters make this trip a true Greek treat.

The islands, the swimming, the walks (optional) and the excellent luncheon served on board with beer or full bodied white or red wines make this trip a day to remember. The numbers of people that keep coming back says it all!

This trip is one of our most popular, and satisfied customers comment on both the tranquillity and fun experienced on a memorable day out.
