Our island, Our future
In an age of greater awareness of the negative impact pollution has on our planet, tourism is one of the main culprits: transportation, over-development and depletion of natural resources help to make sure it is not an environmentally-friendly industry. Skopelos relies on tourism and is faced with these issues -- while attempting to maintain its own cultural heritage and a clean living environment. Madro Travel has a policy of raising the awareness of holiday makers to things they can do here on Skopelos which can make a ‘real’, and positive, difference to the destination and the people living here. As an agency, we wish to actively encourage discussion on and participation in sustainable activities on Skopelos. Madro Travel aims to promote "sustainable tourism." (nature and wildlife activities), ecotourism (promoting yet protecting natural areas from mass-tourism and development), and agrotourism (educational holidays in agriculture and culture to sustain rural population). In these ways, tour operators, local businesses and visitors alike can genuinely appreciate and respect the culture and natural landscape of our island. A holiday spent exploring the countryside and villages, learning about the production of local cuisine and crafts can be a refreshing and rewarding break from city life. The informed traveller can also be directly contributing to the sustainable tourism effort by supporting the communities working to preserve their local traditions. Remember, if we all work together, our message will reach more people, change more minds, and touch more hearts.

Thought for the day
Honesty is the best policy. - Aesop (c.620-560 BC)

Skopelos has many beaches. A lot of them can be reached via  the local bus service during the season, but if you have your own transport, then it is possible to get off the beaten track and discover a small cove which you can enjoy all by yourself. Do not expect sandy beaches, although there are some on the island. Most beaches are shingle and few are commercialised - you will not get 'kiss me quick' hats, candy floss and amusements at all, and on some of the main beaches, expect only sunbeds, sunshades and a kiosk to buy drinks if you are lucky. However, it is possible to stroll along some beaches and have a meal in a good taverna, or a cooling drink by the sea. Be adventurous and try them all!

Stafilos

Stafilos and Velanio These are two beautiful shingle beaches which are located just 4 kilometres from Skopelos town. Stafilos is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It has a taverna and beach bar. Velanio  is the unofficial nudist beach of Skopelos.

Anondas                                                                                  Limonari

Agnondas and Limnonari. Agnondas is a small fishing village approximately 8 kilometres from Skopelos town. It has a few little tavernas which specialise in seafood, right on the sea’s edge, plus a shingle beach. Limnonari is around the headland from Agnondas, and has wonderful fine white sand and turquoise water.

Panormos                                                                               Milia

Panormos and Milia. Panormos is a long shingle beach with very sheltered bathing in crystal clear sea. There is a good selection of tavernas and cafes. Milia is just around the headland from Panormos bay, and is the longest beach on Skopelos with a mix of sand and shingle.

Kastani

Kastani and Hovolo. Kastani  is a beautiful sandy beach just after Milia. It has no tavernas or beach bars so it is a very relaxing and peaceful spot. This is the beach that was the setting for Donna's Bar in the film 'Mamma Mia!'. All evidence of the bar and the jetty were removed after filming because this is a protected area.  Hovolo  is another beautiful sandy beach which even in high season is tranquil as it entails a short walk to reach it.

Other beaches are Perivolo in the north of the island, Glyfoneri and Glisteri near town and many others too numerous to mention!
