Thought for the day
A library is a repository of medicine for the mind. - Greek Proverb

This year, Madro Travel is actively involved in promoting European Eco Week on Skopelos.

ECOWEEK is an international non-governmental organization (NGO). Its mission is to raise public environmental awareness and involvement of the public and especially young people, in environmental protection and the adoption of simple daily habits like household waste recycling, organic waste composting, energy conservation and 'green' building and to undertake activities and initiatives that promote the principles of Worth-Living Integrated Development. ECOWEEK was established on the island of Aegina, Greece in 2005, and is active today in Greece, Cyprus and other countries.

During Green Week we aim to pay particular attention to the immediate environment that surrounds us, at work and at home.

The purpose of Green Week is to highlight "green" issues on Skopelos and to encourage all people to become actively involved in activities to enhance the environment of the island.

Green Week will have Waste as its primary theme, and focus on opportunities for waste minimization, reuse and recycling on the island.

The Municipal Council has decided to concentrate its attention on large scale waste and its disposal. It has already sent several small containers of electrical appliance waste for recycling to the mainland, and now has a system to collect old appliances (for details, contact the Town Hall).

The schools have begun a programme on environmental education – concentrating on the use of plastic bags and their recycling.

Small businesses are already  involved in battery collection and their safe disposal.

Public Seminars will include one on energy awareness and energy conservation; and water- it’s use and conservation.

An understanding of the real cost of waste will be complemented by a series of events around the island focusing on its tree and bird life  and paths to ensure that Green Week goes from strength to strength as an annual event.

Madro Travel will publish details of Green Week packages and events as soon as they are completed.
